Finding The Best Straight Razor

Whether you’ve decided to make the switch from standard razors to the straight razor or you just want to try one to see what it’s about, knowing what to look for will help you find the best one.

They come in so many different tempers, styles, and grinds that if you are buying one for the first time you will likely find it to be a pretty daunting selection. One of the first things you need to figure out before buying the best straight razor is knowing how to get it sharp enough to actually shave with.

To sharpen a straight razor you can buy a hone or pasted strop.  Of course, learning how to actually do the sharpening takes practice and you might damage the blade if you don’t know what you’re doing. You can get your straight razor honed through the stores that you buy them from typically. It’s much cheaper to do it this way than to actually try to by the honing equipment yourself.

Even the best straight razor needs to be stropped prior to use, which means running a leather strap called a strop across the blade. While it’s tempting to skip the step, it is necessary.

Now that you understand a little bit about what is involved when you purchase a straight razor and decide to use one, you can start looking to buy one. If you decide to buy a new one, then you don’t have to worry about inspecting the blade for scratches and hone wear.

However, if you are buying a used one, you need to be very careful to avoid those types of things. Keep in mind that the best straight razor does not have to be expensive. In fact, the more expensive ones usually don’t provide a better, closer shave, they are simply more fancily designed.

Buying your first straight razor is a slightly intimidating, albeit important step. You might not get the best straight razor the first time, but if you learn how to properly hone and strop it and get a great shave, then you will be ready to invest more money for your next one.
